Spotlight: Naf Architect & Design / House for a Diver

Updated: May 3, 2020

Found in the quaint coastal town Etajima on one of Japan's thousands of islands stands House for a Diver. Comprised of the juxtaposition of glass against concrete, this 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom home gives views from every room of Hiroshima Bay.

Granted design freedom, Naf Architect & Design chose an aesthetically simple, yet complex construction approach to the build. The exterior system stacks concrete blocks on top of another, similar to building blocks. These blocks were made at a concrete factory nearby, however only leftover concrete was used - meaning the process of acquiring enough blocks took several years.

Spanning just over 1,100 sq/ft, House for a Diver is made of glass with an aluminum roof. Rooms are separated by pathways with the concrete creating a barrier for privacy.
